Sustainability Insights for 19 Additional Surface Treatment Processes

aPriori 2024 R1 SP2 extends sustainability insights for the Surface Treatment process group. Nineteen additional Surface Treatment processes now provide carbon emission estimates, bringing the total coverage to 27 Processes.

aPriori 2024 R1 SP2 now estimates carbon emissions (CO2e) for the following Surface Treatment processes:

Machine Power Updates for Surface Treatment Processes

The 2024-09 Regional Data Libraries provide updated values for machine rated powers for multiple surface treatment processes. In addition, other machine data was updated for selected Conveyer Shot Blast machines.

Machine rated powers were updated following a review of machines in the Surface Treatment Process Group. This review was conducted to support the carbon estimates for the 19 additional surface treatment processes in this release (See Sustainability Insights for 19 Additional Surface Treatment Processes). Additionally, further updates have been made to other Conveyor Shot Blast machine parameters:

  • Machine length, width, and opening width have been updated for Binhai Arbator Q383, Binhai Arbator Q384, Binhai Arbator Q483, and Binhai Q485.

  • Maximum nesting has been updated for Binhai Q383, Binhai Q384, and Binhai Q485.

  • Shot blasting rate has been updated for Binhai Q483 and Binhai Q485.

A direct overhead impact assessment was performed on Surface Treatment processes with updated machine data. Overall, direct overhead costs decreased by an average of 20% for these processes. The Oven Cure and Conveyor Oven Cure processes experienced the most significant decrease in overhead, at 61%.

Improved Flagging of Processes and Subcomponents that do not Provide Carbon Emissions Estimates

In 2024 R1 SP2 updates were made to the Supports Sustainability flag to ensure the status incorporates user overrides.

As in previous releases, aPriori provides visibility into which manufacturing processes do not yet provide carbon emissions estimates. The Sustainability card (in aP Design) and the Sustainability tab (in aP Pro) both include the number of total processes included in the routing, and the number of Processes Missing Sustainability, that is, processes included in the routing for which carbon estimates are not yet provided or are only partially provided. Additionally, the Part Details view (in aP Pro) displays a field, Supports Sustainability, which is set to Yes for processes that provide carbon estimates. This enables users to understand whether carbon emissions for a part may be underestimated.

In aPriori 2024 R1 SP2, these fields now update as appropriate when a user manually enters carbon estimates for a process or for the top-level scenario. aPriori calculates process and material carbon, so any overrides to material carbon or the child fields of process carbon result in Supports Sustainability being set to Yes. As a result, the Supports Sustainability field now is set to Yes when a user enters a value into any of these fields:

  • Material Carbon

  • Electricity Process Carbon

  • Consumable Process Carbon

  • Other Process Carbon

The value of the Processes Missing Sustainability field also reflects the fact that processes with manually-entered carbon values are not considered to be missing sustainability estimates.

Previously, overriding Material Carbon or Logistics Carbon would set the Supports Sustainability status to Yes. However, overriding Electricity Process Carbon, Consumable Process Carbon, or Other Process Carbon did not update the status or affect the value of Processes Missing Sustainability.

Note: Logistics Carbon overrides no longer affect the Supports Sustainability flag .

Additionally, in aP Pro 2024 R1 SP2, the Subcomponents Missing Sustainability count within the Assembly Sustainability tab was updated to reflect overrides made to assembly subcomponents. Now, if you manually set the Supports Sustainability status to Yes at the top-level of a subcomponent scenario, the count of Subcomponents Missing Sustainability excludes that subcomponent. Previously, this did not update the count of Subcomponents Missing Sustainability. This provides a more accurate representation of missing sustainability data for the assembly.
