Reduce material CO2e for a part

There are several ways to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the material that is used to make a part. For example:

• Use a material with a lower carbon footprint.
• Reduce waste. If a machined part has a high Scrap Material Carbon value, consider a redesign that enables a more net shape process (such as casting).
• Work with suppliers to identify materials, especially metals, that have a higher recycling content, which typically have a lower carbon footprint.
• Choose a material or process that has faster cycle times. The Design Guidance tab can be helpful for this in process groups such as Plastic Molding, where relative cooling time is shown. Lower cooling time means lower cycle time and lower carbon emissions.
• Optimize the material stock to finished part routing to eliminate as much scrap material as possible.
